 This seminar will explore psychoanalytic ways of listening to unconscious processes, affirming the implications and impacts of the sociopolitical on psychic life. Freud has described the psyche as “overdetermined,” meaning multi-causal, and this seminar holds that the sociopolitical is similarly overdetermined, and as such belongs as an integral part of intrapsychic phenomena: It is historical, political, constructed, mutable, and introjected through family and community/peers. As such, this seminar invites participants to recognize their growth edges in the clinical space as it pertains to their capacities for and facilitation of psychoanalytic actions such as reverie, free association, dream analysis, and other forms of psychoanalytic listening.
At the conclusion of this seminar and discussion, participants will be able to:
Define psychoanalytic terms such as introject, unconscious, free association, and
reverie Identify at least two methods of psychoanalytic listening that can be used in
clinical work. Describe at least one way in which the sociopolitical and the intrapsychic inform psychoanalytic listening.

Molly Merson, LMFT, is a psychoanalyst, psychotherapist, consultant, and supervisor in full-time independent practice in California. Molly teaches interdisciplinary courses for clinicians on psychoanalysis and race, queerness, class, decolonial theory, and liberation, and facilitates an ongoing case conference that centers entanglements between sociopolitical, ecological, and intrapsychic life. Molly has presented at severalconferences and talks, including the Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology, Newport Psychoanalytic Institute, Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California, and APsA; was co-guest-editor of Studies in Gender and Sexuality Writing Subaltern Bodies into Psychoanalysis: Autotheory Outside Acceptability; and has authored articles on the subjects of whiteness, sport and queer bodies, anti-Blackness, liminality in telepsychoanalysis, and queer psychoanalytic autotheory, including the chapter “Freud Would Not Be Queer Without Us: An Autotheory on Psychoanalysis as Queer Praxis.” Molly is Past President of Psychoanalysis for Social Responsibility,

Section IX of the Division 39 of the APA, and is an Associate Editorial Board Member of the journal Studies in Gender and Sexuality.

a completed evaluation form. Course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing
