Therapy is where everything counts, especially the things that our mainstream norms discount to marginalize a part of us. It is a place where we are gently encouraged to give a voice to the unheard parts of us so that we may hear what they have to say. It’s a place where we give shape to the parts of us that may have gone invisible for a while. The questions you hold and the things that are “taboo” to talk about out there, are some of the best ingredients for therapy. We are always “coming out” to ourselves first in this way.
I love integrating our roots with our present. For me, that means bringing the part of myself that is trained in the liberal arts, theology, and counseling while working with various nonprofits over the years as a community educator, bilingual case manager, and therapist serving BIPOC communities. It also means inviting the parts of myself that are a writer, a musician, and a first-generation immigrant. It’s to acknowledge that I am an ex-Christian who loves his Christian friends, a proud Ace who is grateful for his previous marriage and what it taught him about the beauty and pain of LGBTQIA+ individuals both in and outside faith communities. It’s to be a small beacon of hope for the straight and queer individuals alike navigating a mixed orientation relationship. It’s to hold my own seeming contradictions with a smile, humor, and humility.
This understanding has shaped me as a person which in turn informs my sensitivities as a humanistic therapist of the person-centered, gentle Gestalt, and artistic modalities for those who are grappling with life’s questions; from the personal and political to the larger-than-life and spiritual. I invite my clients to bring their whole self to this process which we call ‘therapy’ because that is how we truly begin to discern our voice and find a healing direction. I look forward to going on that journey with you.
